Senior Anika Dugal has earned a unique opportunity to work with Supreme Court Justices. How did she get this opportunity? With a Google search on student programs in politics and advocacy, Dugal discovered the United States Senate Youth Program, and worker her way through the rigorous application process.
The USSYP only has a 0.08% acceptance rate. Each high school in New Jersey could nominate one student to apply. Dugal submitted an application that included multiple written essays, a video essay, recommendation letters, and a resume. “Dr. Sasso and Mrs. Simone both wrote recommendation letters to supplement my application,” said Dugal.

Dugal made the top ten finalists out of 2,500 applicants, meaning she could move on to the second part of the process. “The next stage of the process was to attend an intensive interview with about 20 Department of Education officials and teachers,” expressed Dugal. The interview consisted of questions about current events, including the Russian-Ukraine War and fiscal, foreign, and technology policies.

Faculty members commend Anika for her outstanding achievements, highlighting her dedication to academics, community service and a keen interest in government affairs. “She sees things from every perspective,” added Dugal’s AP government teacher, Joseph D’Amico. “She thinks through every possibility thoroughly before developing and sharing her opinion always.”
Not only does Anika work hard outside of school, but she also represents Old Bridge as the president of Future Business Leaders of America. “As president of FBLA, I direct meetings, coordinate chapter events, and spearhead initiatives to teach our members about social entrepreneurship, servant leadership, and business management,” conveyed Dugal.
With this amazing opportunity, Dugal will have the chance to take part in discussions with key policymakers, visit historical sites, and participate in a mock Senate session. “I am also glad that USSYP will provide a hands-on immersion in federal government, and thus improve my ability to promote equity through public policy, which is really my ultimate goal,” said Dugal.

The USSYP aims to inspire young leaders and foster a deeper understanding of the American political process. Dugal’s participation not only reflects her individual accomplishments but also highlights the academic excellence and civic engagement within Old Bridge High School. “I’ve learned that you should never be afraid to reach for lofty opportunities,” shared Dugal. “I think that this was one of the most intimidating programs I’ve applied for in high school, but I am very grateful that I did.”
Old Bridge anticipates Anika’s journey to Washington, D.C. and the insights she will bring back to inspire her fellow students.
