On Thursday May 16, students from all four grades, Fearless Freshman, Surfs Up Sophomores, Junior Jocks, and Safari Seniors, competed in the annual Battle of the Classes. This year, the event returned to during the school day, but only students who signed up in advance could attend.
Seniors and juniors tied for the title of 2024 BOTC winner. “The energy was already high since we were all hungry to win, so when we did win, it was just that much more exciting,” said senior Madison Kravitz.

The event had seven competitions for each grade to compete in. This year, the competition started early, with each student getting a bead necklace with the purchase of a ticket. The week leading up to BOTC, students played “rock, paper, scissors” against other students for their beads, which would gain their class more points. The competition continued at the event with the juniors winning the most beads. “Having the beads was a really cool way to show school spirit and get people excited about attending BOTC,” said Samanatha Prado Roberts.

The event began with a showcase of dances from each grade with custom music and choreography designed by the students. “To prepare for our dance we had many, many practices immediately after school along with some late at night at Geick, and some people even offered their houses,” shared junior Jenna Castle.
Every class worked hard to create an entertaining dance; however, the senior class took home first in the dance portion for their jungle-inspired performance. Freshman followed closely with second place for their Hawaiian-themed dance. “The dance was so fun to create and participate in, and we were happy that we won second,” said freshman Lilymarie Picinich.

Other activities of the event included bowling, basketball, castle ball, egg toss, and more. “Castle Ball was my favorite competition,” said Amanda Jupinka. “It was kind of like dodgeball but without getting eliminated, so I thought it was fun.”
While many students took part in the event, other students came to watch and support their teams from the stands. “I really enjoyed watching the egg toss because everyone was on the edge of their seat in anticipation, and my team, the sophomores, did pretty good,” expressed Jordan Rosenthal.

Not only did BOTC give students the opportunity to show case their competitive skills, but it also gave students the chance to bond with their teammates. “We even had a few pizza parties at our practices,” said Castle. “They were so much fun and brought us together as a team.”
For the students who competed, and the others who cheered on friends and staff, BOTC created exciting memories. “It was cool to see the whole school participate and be competitive together,” said Taryn Johnson. “It was bittersweet knowing that it was the last BOTC I could be a part of.”
