Morgan’s Message, a universal nonprofit organization, shines light on student athlete focused mental health awareness. Sophomore Reagan Connolly became an ambassador and got Old Bridge involved. On October 15, the field hockey team played in honor of Morgan Rodgers.
Division 1 athlete Morgan Rodgers unfortunately lost her battle with mental health in 2019 after facing a life-changing knee injury. Athletes everywhere, including 6,000 ambassadors across four countries carry on her legacy. “I think for many people, knowing they aren’t alone struggling could help them so much,” said Connolly.

Connolly hand-made warm-up shirts for the entire varsity roster which read, “human>athlete” on the front and, “Morgans Message. Taking a shot at mental health.” on the back with a butterfly to symbolize the program and message. “I decided to bring Morgan’s Message to OBHS because I wanted to help be an advocate for people who are scared to speak up,” explained Connolly.
A table covered with positive post-it notes greeted spectators and players as they walked onto the field. “We set up a table with sticky notes providing an opportunity for everyone to write positive, motivational messages,” shared junior Laila Vaughan.

Every Old Bridge player wore teal and orange ribbons in their hair, while opponents from Middletown South wore teal bows. All players wore teal and orange bracelets sharing the shirts’ message. They shared the shirts’ message. “This is now the second time we have used ribbons to spread awareness, it seems like a small gesture, but it really makes a difference. I’m glad to be able to be involved in a program that recognizes the greater things,” said Vaughan.
Before the game began, Connolly shared a heartfelt speech she spent three days preparing with both teams, junior varsity included, laying out the details and mission of Morgan’s Message. Players on both sides were visibly touched. “The game showed people what Morgan’s Message is and what it’s about,” said Connolly.

Connolly and the team, along with Coach Brittany Fuentes, plan to make this the first dedication game of many. “OBHS hosting this event was an amazing experience, Reagan did a wonderful job and brought awareness to everyone. I love how much Morgan’s Message is being spread throughout all different sports across the world. It definitely makes a huge impact on us athletes,” said junior Kaelyn Ritz.
