The 5-3 girls basketball team got their season off to a strong start by winning the Woodbridge Holiday Tournament.
The team’s preparation has set them up for a successful season. “Our team dedicated a lot of hard work during the offseason,” said senior Adriana Misciagna, who leads the team with 114 points.
After starting the season with losses to two tough competitors, the girls hit their stride and won three in a row over winter break. “We started off the season with two losses, but came out of the holiday tournament undefeated,” shared senior Aly Chan, who is second on the team with 16 steals.

The team played Spotswood in the first game of the tournament. “In our game against Spotswood at the Holiday Tournament, we were down by 12 at halftime,” said Misciagna. “It was exciting to come out strong in the second half and ultimately secure the win.”
“It feels really good to be able to play against three really good teams and be able to come out on top,” shared Jada Kmiec. This marks the second year in a row that the girls won a holiday tournament over the winter break.

These wins gave the girls the motivation to win the next two games, including one against their rival, Monroe. “I believe that momentum carried us through and helped us defeat Monroe in our next game,” said Misciagna. On January 2, the Knights won 44-43 against the Falcons at home in the first game after the tournament.
While these wins are great for the girls’ season, they still have a long way to go. “We are staying level-headed as we know we can’t just be happy now because we are winning,” said Payton Kmiec, who has scored 42 points this season. “We have to be happy while putting in the hard work and grinding towards our goals.”

“I think that camaraderie will help us through the rest of the season,” said Adriana Misciagna. The Knights will face the toughest challenge of the season when they take on St. Thomas Aquinas tomorrow, January 11, at home at 1pm.
