On December 13, the girls placed first overall as a team at the Demarest Invitational meet. “It felt especially nice that we earned that victory because all of us really put in hard work during practice, and we were glad the results showed it,” said sophomore Tatum Jones.

Starting the winter with a victory secured a solid position at the beginning of the season. “It feels great knowing I have a strong place to continue off of, knowing my training in the off season has been paying off to help in this current season,” said senior Danielle Boateng.

At the Greater Middlesex Country Relays, the girls placed second in the 4×800 Meter Relay Finals. “I was the first leg, and I was happy to set the tone for the rest of the race, getting out strong,” said junior Samantha Ciaccia, who placed second with her teammates Victoria Botte, Paulina Lewczuk, and Madaline Szakielo in the 4×800 Meter Relay.

“We worked hard all season,” said Madeline Szakielo. “This is just the beginning of our relay, and we are ready for our fastest times to come in and qualify for sectionals.” The team earned several wins, placing in the top three in five events out of the eight they competed in, including third place in the 4×51.5m Shuttle Hurdle Relay Finals and the Varsity Girls 4×200 Meter Relay Finals.

Michelle Aluko kicks her legs up to clear the high jump bar.

The 4×400 relay team took first at GMC Relays with a time of 4:13. “It was amazing, like all the work off season had finally paid off,” said sophomore Natalia Tywanek.

Alongside team wins, the girls met their own personal achievements. “I am most proud of our GMC relays that just happened! We actually won the 4×400 and I ran a PR[personal record],” said senior Victoria Botte.

Throughout the season, the athletes’ teamwork and support for one another keeps the team motivated. “Being at practice with my friends motivates me because we push each other in our workouts, and having the support of the coaches also keeps me going through the season,” said junior Michelle Aluko.

Natalia Tywanek sprints down the straightaway as she holds the baton.

The team looks forward to continuing their powerful season at the NJSIAA Group IV Relay Championships in Toms River this Saturday. “It feels accomplishing to start off the season good,” said Ciaccia. “It’s good to know that the hard work is paying off and staying consistent.”
