On Wednesday, February 21, the People First Club hosted the Sweetheart Soiree. It took place after school, in the main building cafeteria from 2-4pm. Club founders Barbare Shonia, Joshua Kelly, and Jayden Junid organized this charming event.
Most students attended with their friends or their significant others. “I just wanted to have a fun time with friends for Valentine’s Day,” said Alexis Johnson.

The Soiree consisted of games, activities, and food for all guests to enjoy. Specifically, students participated in races, played musical chairs, and indulged in tons of sweets, including a crepe station. “I was pleased to notice that everyone else seemed to enjoy the activities as much as I did,” said Shonia.

“Among all the activities we organized, I would say my favorites were musical chairs and the three-legged race,” said Shonia. Jason Owusu and Tasye Walker won the three-legged race.
“[The Soiree] was very colorful and fun because of the games that we played and the sweets that we ate,” said Devyn Morris. Many of the attendees declared the cookies, chocolate-covered strawberries, and crepe station as the highlights of the Soiree.
Musical chair winners qualified to enter a raffle the club arranged. The prizes consisted of themed baskets that included donated items such as a Coco Channel perfume. “They all included items which correlated to the Valentine’s Day theme,” said Barbare Shonia. Other baskets had themes like girlfriend, boyfriend, and skincare.

The proceeds from the Sweetheart Soiree will support the One Love Foundation, an organization aiding domestic violence victims and educating on unhealthy relationships. “What stood out to me about this was the fact that it’s so relevant since high school is the time that you start dating, so it would be perfect to have an event centered around this,” said Jayden Junaid, one of the organizers of the event.
“My hope is to grow the club, and its base, so we can continue to raise more money and give back more to the community,” said co-founder, Joshua Kelly. The People First club hopes to host more events like this to raise money for more organizations like The One Love Foundation. To learn more about the club, follow them on instagram.
