On December 5, students celebrated the Winter holiday season by wearing festive attire and participating in the Student Senate’s first gingerbread house decorating competition. Eight teams faced off against each other to win $10 Shoprite gift cards.
Included in each team’s $20 fee was a plain gingerbread house kit and icing. Students brought extra decorations to bring their unique ideas to life. “We bought extra decorations from Target, like pink marshmallows and extra icing to make it stand out,” shared Max Towell. “Even though we didn’t win, we still had so much fun!”

Students had about ninety minutes to decorate and secure the structures of their houses. Some teams finished decorating early, and others worked until their time was up. “It was just so much fun seeing everybody on their team have a good time,” said Student Senate Secretary Jordan Rosenthal. “Near the end, everyone’s houses started falling over and it was comical.”

Gingerbread houses look easy to build, but every team faced challenges while constructing their projects. “We didn’t have a plan, and most of us had never built a gingerbread house before,” stated Lily D’antuono. “It was a lot of engineering to hide all the support we added.”
The decorating competition offered students an opportunity to bond with their friends before Winter break. “I thought the event was a great success,” expressed Student Senate President Joseph Lanzafama. “Everyone had a lot of fun, and it was a great way to get into the holiday spirit.”

While every team worked hard on their gingerbread house, only one reigned supreme. Ashley Markle, Samantha Morin, Emma Jones, and Brooke Kobstad from team Santa Slayers won the competition. “Me and my friends didn’t expect to win, but we all had an amazing time together,” shared Brooke Kobstad.
