The boys volleyball team will look to extend the program’s tradition of excellence. The boys had an outstanding season last year, going undefeated the entire season and winning the GMC and NJSIAA Tournaments.

The team, which enters the season ranked #1 in the State by NJ.com, must work hard to overcome the loss of two significant players, including the team leader in kills, Massimo Roco. “Most of our starters right now are seniors and all have developed into great players that have been able to make up for [Massimo’s] absence,” said Anthony Pizzulli.

This year’s team includes last year’s top contributors in most categories, Troy Markle (assists), Ali Chaudary (digs and service points), and Adrian Marke(blocks), and four players with 80+ kills, Logan Fernandes (81), Noah Brown (95), Marke (168), and Lapinski (192).

Junior Adrian Marke, who had 168 kills last season, spikes the at the blockers on the opposing team.

The team will have to work together to make up for the loss of their kills leader from last year to graduation. “The team is different this year as we are filled with depth and people who want to win even more,” said senior Markle, who contributed 702 assists last year. “Every guy on this team believes in one another which creates a good, connected unit.”

The players have displayed a passionate commitment to success, which should work in their favor. “During the play off season I had around four practices a week with the national volleyball club Warren Sixpack, which included playing challenging teams from other states,” said Noah Brown. “I also made sure to stay in shape by going to the gym around 5-6 times a week.”

After going 32-0 last year, the boys have set even higher goals for themselves. “Our goal for the volleyball season is to not only win State championships but also go undefeated in sets this season,” said Pizzulli, referencing the fact that last year’s team surrendered three sets across 32 matches.

Senior Troy Markle, who contributed 720 assists last year, bumps the ball.

Having goals plays an important role in achieving victory. “Some of our expectations are to grind every day and take it one at a time and focus on the task at hand,” added Markle.

The team begins their defense of their titles tomorrow with a match against Monroe at 5:30pm in the OBHS Main Gymnasium.
