The girls volleyball team has started the season undefeated in their first five games without even losing a single set. Last fall, the girls won GMCs and The Central Jersey Group IV Championship.

The girls began the season by defeating Woodbridge, 2-0. “We worked very hard during the summertime to prepare for our upcoming games,” said senior Weronika Malinowski, who led the game with 8 kills and 2 blocks. “We make every minute and drill count during practice.”

On September 9, the girls defeated Colonia 2-0. “It felt good to see all of our hard work pay off especially against a team like Colonia,” said Olivia Grubb who led the team with 2 blocks.

On September 11, the girls dominated Mother Seton, finishing 2-0. “It felt good to beat them! They were definitely a tough team!” said junior Kamaiya Penson. “Our hard work and just having fun on and off the court got us the win.”

Weronika Malinowski, an outside hitter with 29 kills this season, gets low to pass during serve receive.

“I’m most proud of our win from Mother Seton because I feel like we truly played to our full potential and showcased what Old Bridge girls volleyball is all about,” said senior Tetiana Kontsohrada, who is third on the team with 21 kills. The schedule for the rest of the season includes some of the top teams in New Jersey, so the girls will need to continue to play their best.

Although the girls work hard physically, they also focus on their mentality. “We have team meetings about mental toughness which is one of Coach Hopman’s biggest lessons to the team,” said junior Ashely Markle, who leads the team with 32 kills.

Setter Maya Lupinski and middle blocker Tatum Jones double-block the opposing team’s hitter.

Even with all their success, the girls remain driven and dedicated. “It felt great winning, but we cannot let ourselves get caught up in the win. Every day is a new day, and it gives us the opportunity to be better than we were the day before,” said Malinowski, who is second on the team with 29 kills.

“My goal is definitely to win GMC’s, Group 4 Sectional Finals, and ultimately be state champions,” said Markle. The team looks forward to repeating their wins from last season and gaining another state championship title.

The girls aim to continue their winning streak and conquer the rest of their season. Make sure to cheer for the girls on September 16 against JP Stevens!
