With multiple players graduating or moving on, the boys basketball team enters the new season with opportunities for fresh talent to step into key roles. Coming off a strong season with a record of 15-11, this year’s team aims for an even better run.

Despite losing multiple strong contributors this season, the team remains confident and continues to look at the positives. “This year we are very young and not experienced yet, but that is the good part. As we have a lot of potential for the future,” said sophomore Maxwell Dashel, a new addition to the varsity team. “We lost a lot of key players, but that gives a lot more opportunities for guys to step up.”

The team buzzes with positive energy, consistently putting in the daily work required to achieve their goals. Junior Cameron Olivencia said they plan to “just get 1% better each day,” an approach they hope will help them stand out even more this season.

“I’m going to be more of a leader this year since I’m the team captain,” said junior Victor Przepiora. “[I plan on] bringing energy and effort plus probably being a key scorer.” Jumping from 22 points his freshman year to 287 points last season, season, Victor made himself a crucial contributor to the team.

Jared Meyer, a former OBHS player who has taken the position as head coach for the team this year, will strive to continue his legacy as a Knight. “I feel great and I am very excited that he is now our coach,” said Maxwell. “I think he is a great fit to get our team where it needs to be.”

The boys set goals to prove themselves by the end of the season. “[Our] primary goal this year is to play quick,” said Olivencia. “We are undersized, so we have to use our speed and chemistry to beat these teams.”

Brent Dittmar gathers a power-dribble and prepares to go up strong over an opposing player in the way to winning the Freshman Tournament Championship.

Other than goals being set, players motivate themselves in other ways to try working on their weaknesses. “Practice is important to me, and I do some outside of school,” said senior, Evan Walker.

The boys open the season at home against Eagle Academy for Young Men on Saturday December 13 at 10am.
