On May 27, select students from The Metropolitan Club earned the opportunity to go on an exclusive trip to see Broadway’s The Outsiders and attend a theatre masterclass for singing and dancing. Students who attended had participated in fundraising and volunteering.
The masterclass, led by original cast members of The Outsiders Melody Rose and Tilly Evans Kreuger gave students a chance to perform for professionals and get feedback. “It was awesome,” said Barnett. “I loved getting feedback from people that I know are super talented. They really helped me feel good about my singing and skill.”

Elizabett Barnett performed “Gimme Gimme” from Thoroughly Modern Millie, Catherine Shapiro presented “For Better or Worse” from The Great Gatsby, and Scarlett O’Brien sang “Nothing” from A Chorus Line. “I am so glad I got to perform it for Melody and Tilly because they both inspired my art and encouraged me to follow my dreams,” said Scarlett O’Brien.
Rose and Kreuger taught the group of students a dance routine from “Friday at the Drive-in,” a number in The Outsiders. “I love dancing, and I’ve been dancing my whole life, so I had a great time getting to dance with two professional dancers, along with my friends,” expressed Jillian Breinsock, the Vice President of the club.

After the masterclass, students got to chat with Rose and Kreuger about their lives in the acting business. “My favorite part of the trip was doing the masterclass with Melody and Tilly because it gave an inside look on choreography from the show, and it was also wonderful talking to them because we got to listen to their experience in the Broadway and performing industry,” said Tessa Manna.
The students then headed to West Way Diner for lunch to enjoy food and dine with friends in New York City. “It was cute and very classic,” said Manna.

The group then headed to The Jacobs Theatre. Filled with photos of the cast members, souvenirs, and other small details, the theatre truly felt like Tulsa in 1967. “My favorite part of the trip was watching everyone’s faces light up as we saw the performers take the stage and be in their element,” said Savannah O’Brien Treasurer of the club. “It truly made the whole trip come to life.”
Watching the show brought back memories from reading the book in middle school. “I absolutely love the story of the show,” expressed Barnett. “It was my favorite book in middle school, so seeing it on stage is so cool.”

After the show concluded, students took photos with the cast and got their playbills signed. “Being a part of this club, this year was such an honor, and the trip really made it so much more amazing,” said Breinsock. “I loved being involved in this club and will continue it next year.”
Scarlett O’Brien, the President of the Metropolitan Club who now runs the club with the support of faculty members Jenna Kaeser, Brittany Fuentes, and Elio Bustamonte, revived the club after it faded out in the 2010’s. “Ms. Walsh brought up the idea to me last year and I knew I had to bring it back with my own touch!” said Scarlett.
