On Sunday May 3, members of the faculty and staff of Old Bridge schools will play the Harlem Wizards Empire Unit at 3pm at OBHS. Organized by the Special Education PTA, the event will benefit special needs classrooms across Old Bridge.

The wizards, a performance basketball team focused on fundraising for non-profits and schools, played Old Bridge staff in 2022 when SEPTA previously brought them together. “The Harlem Wizards are amazing people who love to perform for the kids,” said Diane Michael, SEPTA Vice President. “Their show and the smiles and laughter at the event speaks volumes about this unique basketball game!!!”

Against the Harlem Wizards, teachers and staff from Old Bridge’s elementary, middle, and high schools will play for Old Bridge UKnighted. “Having a background in basketball, it felt like a natural fit to play in the game and help out a great cause,” said Matt McCann, an OBHS boys basketball coach.

One of the Wizards dances and taunts the crowd during the team’s previous performance in Old Bridge.

“We will always stay steadfast in our mission of supporting ALL children and provide whatever we can to help each student reach their fullest potential!” said Michaels. SEPTA plans to use all funds raised from the game toward making special education classrooms more comfortable and inclusive for all Old Bridge students with varying needs.

SEPTA will use the funds to create unique life skills rooms, sensory environments, and learning spaces. “The real purpose of the event is to support some amazing students in our district, so it’s going to be an incredible experience no matter the final score,” said Vice Principal Jon Bill.

Superintendent Sasso, one of the main organizers of this event, also plans to play. “[I] can’t wait to see Dr Sasso’s skills on the court!” said Interim OBHS Principal Sally Fazio.

Superintendent Dr. Vincent Sasso brings the ball up the court against the Wizards in the last game.

Come out on May 3 at 3pm to root for the staff, have a great time, and support the students of Old Bridge! “My expectations are many! A packed gymnasium! A lot of laughter! Definitely partaking in the 1000 people dance party at the end of the game!” said Michael. “Unity – what a small word with a huge impact!”

“Students should come out to see the game because it will be an event that brings community together for a great cause,” said Bill. Purchase tickets to the event by clicking this link.
